And Now The End Is Near

In a few hours the world will start the countdown that ends this decade.
The naughties as they are coined.

What did this decade bring you.
Was it love or was it loss.
Was it success or failure.
Did you go from rags to riches or did you lose it all.

It's a weird thing to think about now that the end of this decade is near.
What has it brought me?

Would I say love, because of the relationship I was in for the larger part of this decade?
Or would I say loss, because I let it slip away just before the end.
Could I say success, for the reason of me actually studying and becoming a teacher.
Or is it a failure that I didn't finish my education when I wanted to.

It's hard for me to tell what kind of feeling I get from the naughties, but I'm looking forward to the next decade and I hope the next decade will bring you all you the good things you hope for.

Happy New Year!

Doubt

Some days doubt fills your head.
Everything you want, feel, think and do is unsure.
You second guess all the things that pass you by.

Am I on the right track?
Is this what I really want?
Am I making the right decision?

It can be enough to drive you crazy.

Thankfully there are other days when you just know.
There is no doubt, no insecurity and no second guessing what is going on.

Eventhough it's good to question our actions, I enjoy knowing, feeling, doing and thinking without any doubt.

Whole

I had lost you for weeks.
I was without hope.
I have moved heaven and earth to mend it,
but without result.
Eventually I tried it with others.
Which did not give me any satisfaction.
But today I got the piece I needed to make everything whole again

Now I can skate once more.

Conflict

Love can tear a person apart.
Especially when it's unanswered.

Getting over the love you've had for so long takes time.
It won't go away easily, quietly or without a fight.

Finding new love is very good for your ego.
It tells you you're still desired, you're still attractive.

But finding new love too soon leads to conflict.
Your old feelings still unresolved and taking your attention away from those new feelings.

What are you to do, should you wait for the old feelings to be resolved?
Should you take a leap and plunge into the unknown depths of those new feelings?
Should you face the conflict head on or will you run away?

What are you to do when your feelings are in conflict?

In Dreams

Late at night I go to bed.
I rest my head on a pillow.
I go to sleep thinking about tomorrow.

In my sleep I dream.
In my dream I do things that aren't possible.
I meet people who are long forgotten.
I see things I really want.

These things all feel so real.
It is as if I only need to reach out my hand.
Reach out, grab hold of it and never let go.
It is as if all that I want is there, but I can't be.

I wake up.

New and Old

An antique piece of furniture is old, but to a person buying it for their house it's new.

A very old joke is always new to someone who has not heard it before.

New movies aren't always as new as they seem, sometimes the story has been told many times before which makes them old.

Those feelings we have from time to time.

Eventhough these feelings are new, we could have had them before, that would make them old.

Be it new or old, felt before or for the first time. All these feelings will come back one way or another.

When they come, embrace them.

The Other Christams Spirit

12 eggs, separated
6 cups milk
2 cups heavy/ thickened cream
2 cups bourbon
1+ ½ cups sugar
¾ cup brandy
2 teaspoons ground nutmeg

In a large bowl and using a mixer, beat the egg yolks together with the sugar for approx 10 minutes (you want the mixture to be firm and the colour of butter).
Very slowly, add in the bourbon and brandy - just a little at a time.
When bourbon and brandy have been added, allow the mixture to cool in the fridge (for up to 6 hours, depending on how long before your party you're making the eggnog).
30 minutes before your guests arrive, stir the milk into the chilled yolk mixture.
Stir in 1+ ½ teaspoons ground nutmeg.
In a separate bowl, beat the cream with a mixer on high speed until the cream forms stiff peaks.
In yet another bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Gently fold the egg white mixture into the egg yolk mixture.
Gently fold the cream into the egg mixture.
After ladling into cups, garnish with the remainder of the ground nutmeg.

Serves: 8.

Cheers!

Christmas Spirit

Each and every year.
When this time draws near.

We come together and share.
We give all that we can spare.

Love and positive things we wish upon each other.
Time we spend with brothers, sisters, father and mother.

Time and money we give to charity.
All for peace and unity.

We give our best without making a fuss
All we do in the spirit of Christmas.

Why do we only behave this good when this time comes round?

Think about it...

Merry Christmas everybody!

Waiting for...

As I stand looking at the other people around me.
I realize that every person has a different story.
Every face a different destination.

Some people are on the phone,
others are reading a newspaper or book.
Others are listening to music.

I don't know exactly who these people are.
And yet I do, they are just like me.
Waiting for...

No Strings Attached

Music is the greatest thing in the world.
It lifts our spirits when we're down.
It drives us insane when we hear that annoying song for the gazillionth time.
We can seduce and fall in love because of it.
It can break and mend hearts.

If listening to music can do just that,
Then playing music must be so much better.

Playing an instrument can be even better than any therapist.
It can shift your attention to other things.
It can sooth and relax you when the stress is too much to bare.

How frustrating is it when the string snaps on your guitar and you can play no more?

Who is my brother?

You start of exactly the same. The same genetics however don't make the same person.

The actions and events in our life define us. It makes us individuals.

Family can resemble so much, but differ even more.

Where one falls and stands up to dust himself off and move on, the other might stay on the ground wondering what might have been.

How can it be that the people you grow up with, your brothers and sisters are so different from yourself.

Why, because we are individuals and we find our own way.

There is no wrong or right. No ultimate path to enlightenment.
We all go our own way, our separate ways that define us, that makes us who we are.

Roller Coaster

Emotional states change all the time.
Every morning when were out of coffee.
Every night we had too much to drink.

Sometimes they stay the same for a long period of time.
Whilst other times they can change on a whim.

It's like riding a roller coaster blindfolded and for the first time.
You never know which turn it is going to take.
Will it go up or down, left, right, fast, slow and you don't know when it will stop.

It exciting and scary at the same time.
Some people fight it, but we have no control over it.
So why fight, just sit back and enjoy the ride.

It might be the ride of a lifetime.

Moving Fast, Moving Slow

Sometimes life seems move at a pace that is so slow that nothing seems to be moving at all.

Everything is just they way it's supposed to be. All goes well and life seems to be just perfect, until...

Reality sets in. Everything changes so fast that you have to hold on to the seat of your pants. It all moves so fast it's difficult to adjust.

Moving fast is exciting, you don't know what is going to happen next.

But sometimes moving slow can be better , you can enjoy the scenery, the journey, take in all the beautiful moments and experiences you have.

But moving fast gets you at your destination a lot quicker. It's gets you to that perfect place. Ultimate happiness.

What would you choose?

I Love Who?

This one is dedicated to my little brother.
May you find what you are looking for.

We go out and meet people.
Maybe in a bar, at work or you might just bump into them at random.

Sometimes it goes a little further than just meeting.

You grow fond of that person, you like that person. Then you really like them and before you know it, you fall in love.

But will the other person feel the same, do they share that intense emotion or do they just like you.

You have to find out somehow and take a leap of faith.
First you'll whisper it in their ears and if they say it back you can finally shout it so the whole world will hear...

I love you!

Move Forward

Looking back is a good thing to do.
Recollecting old memories from the past
The good old days, happy times of the years before.

It also helps us to reflect on the things we did.
The things we not very proud of.
The things we'd rather forget.

But looking at these things might help us better understand who we are and why we did such things.
We can learn from the things we did.

But living in the past is a bad thing to do.
Thinking what life could have been like if you had just done things differently.

You can't change what you did in the past.
You must accept it and move forward.

We All Fall Down

When we grow up
We learn to walk
But we all fall down

We learn how to ride a bike
No matter how good we are
We all fall down

We learn to skate, ski or surf
We have great fun
We'll still fall down

We fall in love
We break our hearts
And we fall down

But we get back up
Dust ourselves off
And try till we get it right

All Bad Things...

Of all the things that you can feel, the bad things al always the worst. Pain, illness, shame, heartbreak.
We must all endure them.

The thing that makes the bad things good, is that they make the good things feel even better.

And thankfully, like the good things...

All bad things also come to an end.

All Good Things...

Like everything in life, nothing lasts forever.
We grow older every day to hopefully die of old age.
The stuff we buy wears and will finally breakdown, preferably when we have no more use for them.

But what about love...
Love they say is eternal, it can last forever or at least until we are no more.
But sometime love just lasts a moment, a small speck in our long lives...

That is when we find out that all good things come to an end.

Trash and treasure

To be thrown out like trash is a hard thing to accept.
You have the feeling you're still useful.
You're still in good nick.
You have all your parts and all of them work.
You might have a screw that is somewhat on the loose side, but with a little care and attention you can be restored to full working order.
You'll be like you were before, dependable, lovable and useful. Even more than you already were.

There are still some people who grow tired of that old item. Even though they still use it. It doesn't give them that feeling which they had when they first got hold of it. One day they finally think that repairing isn't worth the effort. They can live without it or just get a newer model.

They'll throw you out like the trash they think you are...

One person' s trash is another person' s treasure.

I still feel like treasure.

And there will be a person who will see that in me.

Broken

You were mine.
You brought me happiness
With you, I felt good.
Without you I can hardly move.

Where I want to turn right, I will go straight.
Where I want to stand, I will fall.
It is as if someone is forcing me in another direction.

It went well for so long
I took goo care of you.
You made me better.

Why did that blade have to break.
Now I can't skate anymore.

Letting go

Holding on comes natural.
It's easy.
We do it when we're scared, when we seek comfort or when we love.
It keeps us on our feet, it keeps us sound of mind.

Letting go is hard.
Is goes against all the fibers in our body.
It makes us vulnerable to the harsh outside world.
It lets us drop into the unknown abyss below us.

But if holding on keeps us from becoming who we really are, if it stand in the way of our development, then letting go is the best we can do...

Otherwise there will be nothing left to hold on to.

I'm letting go.

The start of my blog

Hi everybody,

Let me introduce myself.
My name is Rick and I live in the Netherlands, That's in Europe and it's also known as Holland. It's one and the same people!
I live near Amsterdam our great capital city and have a taste of the city life as well as the suburban life.
For the last 7 years I was in a committed relationship until we broke up. (in other words she dumped me).
I teach English as a second language at a secondary school in the town that I currently live in.
That's why I choose to write in English.

Anyway

A couple of weeks ago I started blogging.
Mostly short poem like things about the feelings I had about me being single again, and the things I felt.
Agony and hardships are always good things to inspire people to write.
I posted them on a Dutch social networking site, but wanted to post them for a wider audience.
So here it is.

I hope you enjoy it and please share your opinions with me.

Yours,

Rick
